Metallic nano-particles light up another path towards eco-friendly catalysts

-Platinum clusters consisting 19 atoms perform 50 times higher catalytic activity-

Scientists at Tokyo Institute of Technology produced subnano-sized metallic particles that are very effective as catalysts for the oxidation of hydrocarbons. These catalysts can be as much as 50 times more effective than well-known Au-Pd bimetallic nanocatalysts.

Each dendrimer molecule hosts a subnano-sized metallic particle that allows for the oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons, such as toluene (left), to produce useful organic compounds, such as benzoic acid (right). Oxygen molecules are represented in red.

Superatom

Partikel yg tersusun dr sejumlah atom lebih kecil dr 100 buah atom namanya cluster. Nah, pada cluster elektron yg menyusun atomnya ga hanya beredar di orbit atom itu sendiri tp dia mengitari permukaan cluster tsb. Akibatnya, jumlah elektron penyusun lapisan orbit terluarnya berbeda dg jumlah elektron penyusun lapisan orbit atom jenis itu sendiri. Misalnya yg sdh ditemukan adl Aluminium dg 13 atom, susunan elektron terluarnya sama dg gas Argon. Eh karena itu, sifat Al13 mirip gas Argon. Yg spt itu namanya superatom. Atom2 yg memilih sifat khusus atau berbeda dg jenis atom penyusunnya. (more…)
